Here at DGU we spend a great deal of our time leading, supporting and implementing projects. 10 Success Cases born and developed in DGU were already documented and are being shared within all EDP (through our Digital Transformation Page on EDP´s Intranet and Workplace) and in this article we'll be offering you a sneak peak to them all.
Besides getting to know better what we are doing, you may also find some guidance to deal with some bumps on the road for your own projects.
SHIFTING PARADIGMS: THE AGILE TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY
Staying relevant in an age of disruption means being forward-thinking and willing to change behavioral habits – and EDP Group has been making strides to redefine its working environment with new methodologies and the latest technologies. The group recognizes that the path through and to the future requires a more flexible, agile way of working supported by IT systems that help it focus on what matters: effectively serving the different needs of its clients. The Agile project has revealed not only to be a new and disruptive methodology but also a people-to-people transformation process.
API and Microservices
DIGITAL DEMAND FOR SIMPLICITY
What does it mean to be successful in the digital world? It means to be light, agile, and flexible in the work method; to be efficient, resilient, and fast in the delivery; and to be disruptive, transformational, and catalytic in the mindset. These are also the reasons to explain the success of EDP's API and Microservices initiative, a project led by the willingness of learning and the courage to fail.
Big Data Analytics
HARNESSING THE POWER OF BIG DATA ANALYTICS TO GAIN FIRST-MOVER ADVANTAGE
In a data-driven era, organizations like EDP, willing to combine the power of IT and communication technologies, are the ones leading the way to new innovative business approaches supported by emerging IoT, machine learning, and big data technologies. That’s why, in 2015, the former DSI (Direção de Sistemas de Informação) and EDP Innovation acknowledged the opportunities of big data analytics to optimize internal procedures and contribute to better and more informed business decisions. After a proof of concept, the CCBA (Centro de Competências Big Data & Analytics) was created.
EDP's Digital Transformation plan considers the Cloud migration of a large number of EDP systems.
The ClearSky Program, coordinated by the Cloud & Infrastructure area of the Digital Global Unit, thus emerges from a Digital Enabler perspective, encompassing projects and activities that shape the organization's Cloud strategy. With this Program, it is intended to capitalize on the advantages inherent in the adoption of Cloud models, namely, in terms of cost reduction through the automation of systems and the adjacent elasticity and availability.
A global budget of 28 million euros has been stipulated for the five years of program execution, which began in February 2018 and is expected to end in 2022, and an expected reduction in operating and maintenance costs for applications by 12 million euros. per year after its completion.
A NEW WAY TO EXPERIENCE DATA PROTECTION
CODEX stands for customized operations and data discovery experience. It is a unique solution that provided EDP with a new data protection capability. CODEX is also an example of how a committed and resilient team overcame several roadblocks. Their efforts provided the company with a one-of-its-kind solution that answers all General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements and solves the problem of the IT system’s idiosyncrasies at the same time. CODEX has delivered successful data management and GDPR compliance since May 25th, 2018.
AN END-TO-END PAYMENTS SYSTEM FOR AN IMPROVED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
To fully navigate the digital world, EDP is investing in disruptive innovation to meet the needs of its stakeholders and drive business transformation from within – the Collect project is a leading example of how technology can greatly impact both employees and clients’ journey. Collect is an End-to-End Payments System supporting dunning collection to all companies within EDP Group. The process is now automatized offering simplified and effective services.
PROMOTING CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS
Cybersecurity plays a vital role in digital transformation. The key strategies for fighting an invisible enemy that can attack at any time, using any digital device, causing severe damages to the organization are: raise awareness, encourage preparation, and spread information. Sensitive to this fact, EDP is set to build a strong defence that counts on every coworker. Investment in transformative technologies can be meaningless if the business, its customers and other vital assets are not appropriately protected.
THE UNION OF PEOPLE, PROCESS, AND PRODUCTS ENABLING CONTINUOUS DELIVERY OF VALUE TO OUR END USERS.
Time optimization, process automation, standard frameworks, decreased lead time, premium software quality. These are the everyday buzzwords in the DevOps Center of Excellence. Launched in 2016, the Center aims to create a common DevOps framework to speed up the software deployment process, cutback lead times, and increase software quality. It is a people, process, and products combination that targets the ambitious and bold EDP commitment: fully operational agile software development by 2021. A full agile paradigm demands a full DevOps mindset.
Energy Data Management
In January 2019, the EDM (Energy Data Management) project was started, implemented by DGU and EDP Distribuição, which aims to create a new solution for the management of EDP Distribuição's energy data, collected for all levels of voltage, including data from smart meters.
The solution being implemented will be made available on the Cloud under “Software as a Service” (SaaS), meeting the decisions of the IT strategy defined by EDP.
The main objectives of the project are:
- Provide EDP Distribuição with a main technological platform for the management and consolidation of count data for the entire organization;
- Ability to integrate with the new commercial management solution under development in the JUMP program;
- Enhance the reduction of cost and operational time for data processing;
- Provide capabilities for the collection and integrated management of energy and customer data;
- Improve demand forecasting capabilities, minimizing deviations;
- Ensure analysis to detect consumption patterns that indicate fraud.
BEHIND A REAL-TIME MINDSET: THE HERMES APPLICATION
Thriving in a digital era means having a targeted multichannel communication strategy which includes all business stakeholders. When real-time communications have become a modern world commodity, EDP levels up with a new innovative messaging experience to its clients, co-workers, and suppliers - the Hermes Application. Developed as an upgrade to the EMS application, this tool was engineered to manage all internal communications in a faster and more efficient way, giving its users full autonomy over the process.
UNLOCKING SUCCESS IN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
Change. Transformation. Disruption. All are synonymous with hard work, doubt, and expectation management. However, with the right mindset and the right people, it can also mean success, evolution, and leadership. Focused on conducting a successful digital transformation, Digital Factory's Minimum Viable Products (mVP) represent a change in the way digital products are developed, deployed, and delivered at EDP Group. It is a shift that has required fresh levels of creativity, engineering, and commitment in this new digital journey
VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE PAVING THE WAY TO A DIGITAL KNOWLEDGE-BASED TRANSFORMATION
EDP Group is investing in innovative ways to create a more flexible and knowledge-based ecosystem, leading the organization to a new digital reality – and the Virtual Communities of Practice are a great example of that. The idea first came up during EDPx, the initial acceleration project that happened between November 2017 and June 2018, but it would only take form later, in December 2018, as a way of reaching out to all people with expertise or interest in digital-related areas and promoting a knowledge-sharing culture
